WHAT CAUSES INGROWN HAIRS [AND HOW TO GET RID OF THEM FOR GOOD]

Those pesky little red bumps across our bikini line, under our arms, and even on our legs sometimes are no fun. They hurt! And it seems like they always pop up after a wax, right?! WHY is this?

Let me tell you the dirty details. #punintended

Ingrown hairs can be caused by a few ways:

  1. Dead Skin
This is the most common cause of ingrown hairs. If you don’t exfoliate regularly, dead skill cells can get trapped in the hair follicles (along with bacteria and new hair growth) and clog up the pore. #yikes This is why I always tell my clients to exfoliate every other day! Keep the dead skin away as much as possible for healthy, smoother skin.

  2. Tight Clothing
I love leggings too, don’t get me wrong. But consistently wearing tight clothing like leggings, skinny jeans, spandex, polyester underwear, etc can keep the skin from being able to breathe, therefore expediting the process of ingrown hairs forming! No fun, right? Wear cotton underwear and leggings if possible, so the skin can breathe and not rub against synthetic fabrics.

  1. Coarse Hair
If you’re a lucky one who has thick, course, or curly hair, then you may be more susceptible to ingrown hairs.

No matter the culprit, ingrown hairs are the worst.

To get rid of these hair monsters and prevent them from popping up, follow these tricks:

  1. Exfoliate every other day with a good body scrub or dry exfoliation cloth to remove dead skin cells that clog pores. We sell a wonderful sugar scrub at our salon that is handcrafted by the owner of Joie Botanicals. She utilizes all-natural ingredients, including her secret blend of essential oils, to create a deliciously smelling scrub that will leave your skin silky smooth!

  2. Take warm showers before heading to your wax appointment to open up the hair follicles and help the hair pull out easier and less painfully. Doing this will keep the pores from tightening up and hair from breaking—which causes bumps and ingrown.

  3. Wear loose clothing as much as you can. You don’t have to give up your leggings and spandex for good! But when you’re relaxing at home or running casual errands, be nice to your skin and let it breathe.

  4. Get frequent waxes to get your skin and hair used to the treatment. Hair will grow back thinner and in an even direction, making hair removal easier and less painful.

  5. Don’t shave in between waxes. Doing this will mess up the new growth pattern and can cause hair to break, skin irritation, razor burn, and ingrown hairs. Just avoid shaving and get your wax on!

Unfortunately, ingrown hairs are inevitable. However, these pro tricks will help reduce the inflammation and pain and keep ingrown hairs from forming!
